Oregon City, OR – A 35-year-old Oregon City man is facing 10 felony charges, in connection with the kidnapping of a 10-year-old Canby girl, and a brutal attack on her 12-year-old sister.
Vince Edgar Chavez was arraigned in Clackamas County Circuit Court Thursday, on the charges, including First-Degree Attempted Murder, First-Degree Kidnapping, First-Degree Assault, several Sex Abuse charges and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
The older girl was hit in the head numerous times with a hammer and police found the younger girl at an Oregon City home, restrained by duct tape and stuffed in a duffle bag, Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owen said at the arraignment.
“Due to the numerous violent felonies alleged in this case and the vulnerability of the victims, we are asking the court to hold the defendant without bail,” Owen said.
Circuit Judge Jeffrey S. Jones granted the request that Chavez be held without bail at the Clackamas County Jail. Chavez will be arraigned on an indictment on Nov. 5.
“The District Attorney’s Office is grateful for the swift action by our law enforcement partners in locating and arresting the defendant before he could inflict further harm,” Owen said.
We thank the Canby Police Department, the member agencies of the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, the FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Service for their diligent work in rescuing this child,” Owen said.
The 12-year-old girl remains hospitalized, with severe injuries.
