The iPhone Duo might have semi-mixed reviews, thanks to its awkward app support and mid-range camera, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t introduced some winning ideas that we hope all foldables adopt. One of those is the iPhone Duo’s Standby Mode, which allows you to “tent” the device and have it’s cover screen show as a clock with weather, your calendar, that sort of thing.
While this has always been the most obvious feature idea for a foldable, no Android foldable maker has given it a try yet. And since Samsung and Google haven’t realized how great this feature could be, a 3rd party app developer has gone ahead and done it for us.
A new app called Foldy has emerged and it does exactly as the iPhone Duo does, only you could install it on your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Actually, you could install it on other Android devices too, but foldables just make the most sense.
Not sure what I mean? The image up top of my Galaxy Z Fold 8 shows the most basic example. Basically, you can take a foldable and slightly open it into the shape of a tent and set it on its side. In this setup, it makes sense that the cover display could come on in an always-on state to show information, like a clock, the weather, music or media controls, your upcoming calendar items, battery status, etc.
We took Foldy for a spin earlier today to see if it actually works, and thankfully, it does. It’s free too, but there is a paid version if you really want to dive into its best features. You’ll probably end up paying for it, to be honest.

The free version basically lets you have a single widget or item showcased on it, like a clock or your calendar. If you want a couple of widgets – weather next to a clock or calendar – you’ll have to pay.
As of today, paid Foldy has a 3-day free trial and then costs $0.89 per month. You could also buy a lifetime license for $8.99. If you own a foldable and don’t think Samsung or Google will copy this feature pretty soon (I bet Samsung does), that could be worth it.
Give it a try and let us know what you think.
